Rupe Goldman

Good morning, it is Saturday.

Twenty minutes until it is time to take Hansen to his soccer game in Orting...I have time to blog! Of course, Orting reminds me of golfing with my dad at High Cedars back when I couldn't quite beat him yet and I tried and tried and every now and then I would.

Here are some random pictures:

Don't I look great!
Look who came off the bus yesterday! Lillie did a great job with her school costume! Not sure what she will be today or tomorrow.
Preston wearing Halloween costume...a Dr. shirt. That is as good as it gets for this teenager!
Hansen as a strange Ben Franklin. He had a report due yesterday that was both a Rube Goldberg machine and an American history lesson. This is his trial run at home. The machine worked flawlessly sending a kite with a key attached into the air. His bald wig is perfect. Hansen did a lot of work to pull this off...and I helped a little. I have accidentally called this project a Rupe Goldman project for so long that I made that the title for today's blog.
This is a picture of me on the wall at Cedar Valley Elementary. All the staff members were photographed with their favorite book and there are pockets of pictures around the school.

My time is up...See you tomorrow.

A well used certificate.

Good morning, it is Thursday.

Yesterday was piano lesson day. Kind of a race from school to piano for the littles. As you know Preston took piano lessons many years ago. The last page of the Primer Level book has a certificate that the teacher can fill out for completing the book. Preston was done back in 2004, then the books got handed down to Hansen and Lillie. Lillie completed the series yesterday! Now the same certificate in the back of the Primer Lesson book has all three of their names on it and is dated by their piano teachers:

Lillie added a smiley face as Hansen had added a smart remark about being prettier than his brother. Hansen does Have Preston's old books for the next level, but Lillie's teacher wanted her to have her own set (I guess they write in them and such). Anyhow, these kids earn plenty of certificates and awards on their own, but it is fun to see one that has all of their names on it.

See you tomorrow.

pie and prizes.

Good morning, it is Wednesday.

A couple of days ago Preston had his friend Austin over for some x-box before soccer practice. I was reading the paper and came across a few very funny cartoons about annoying little siblings. Since they both have annoying little siblings, I thought they would like them...but no, they were like, "what's so funny?" So I moved on, away from the humorless teenagers messing up my house. Now I love pumpkin pie, but not all the cartoons about how to make pumpkin pie. Pumpkins pooping out pumpkin pie doesn't do much for me. So when I came across this cartoon, which I thought was mildly funny, I decided to show it to the kids to show it to them...and yes, they both thought it was very far the best one I showed them!

Changing the topic, the other day there was a whole school staff meeting. Usually I don't make it to staff meetings as they are always two hours before I arrive and they are for the certified staff. Anyhow, the principal did a drawing and gave two lucky people a fabulous prize! And you guessed it...I won a fabulous prize! Here it is:
A scented pencil made from 100% recycled newspapers! It smells of black cherry or something in that genre. I have not brought it home to let the kids fight over it yet...and maybe I wont. It may just live at school, on the corner of my desk, like the major prize that it is, like a leg lamp.

See you tomorrow.

Good morning, it is Monday.

A couple of soccer firsts this weekend: Hansen scored his first goal of the season!!! He got a breakaway run and finished it off with a very solid kick to the right side of the goal. Way to go Hansen! Preston scored his first Hat Trick of this season...three goals in one game. Preston also scored a bunch of goals in the indoor double header they had yesterday. I took a picture of Maren's car parked next to a new Porsche (at Starfire) that was the exact same size and color...I don't really know why, so I didn't post it. Maren's car is doing just fine...I changed the oil over the weekend as it now has 105,000 miles. I also picked up some paint to do the pick-up truck. I have decided I will try to do the top and the hood myself after watching a bunch of YouTube videos. If it turns out crummy, the professionals can fix it. I probably should wait until summer, we'll see.

While a first goal is cool, new shoes, new Nerf guns, and a new car for mom are really not the kind of reward one could ever expect (not that Hansen didn't ask) for such a moment...but a Frap from Starbucks is about right!
Maren made Halloween burgers for dinner Saturday. Cute and Delicious...with all the trimmings of course.
See you tomorrow.

Carving pumpkins

Good morning, it is Saturday.

Last night was pumpkin carving night! Preston decided he would rather hang out with friends than carve pumpkins with us...his loss. Maren, Hansen, Lillie and I went to Costco for some dinner and shopping then headed over to Safeway to pick out pumpkins! No pumpkin patch for us this year...this weekend is just too rainy, last weekend was just too is this one actually! Anyhow, we found a couple of nice and big pumpkins at Safeway and brought them home to carve. This year my roll had changed a bit. I was in charge of taking the tops off and gutting the pumpkins, thus getting them ready for the kids to carve:

Lillie picked her own pumpkin out, drew a clever cat with words "Boo" above and below, then carved it out all by herself! She was very happy with her first ever carved pumpkin, but for some reason didn't want any "after" photos with her masterpiece.
Hansen also picked out his pumpkin and spent a long time planning the perfect carving.

He went for the mirror opposite scary face. He didn't mind getting his picture taken with his pumpkin...but he wasn't putting down his ice cream either.

And here they are glowing in front of the house last night!

See you tomorrow.

The puppet master.

Good morning, it is Friday.

Yesterday we had a bit of an overlap where I was at Hansen's soccer and Maren was at Internet safety night at Preston's school. In order to bring their assigned computer home, students need their parents to attend an Internet safety class. Now Maren is going to be a safer Internet user, and Preston will be able to bring the computer home. The overlap just means, no in Preston in charge of Lillie for a bit. I was asking Lillie about having Preston watching her and she was very happy! She said she loves to have Preston watcher so she can make him mad! Huh? I asked. Yup, her plan is to get a lollipop and hang in her room until he starts to play x-box, then after a few minutes she likes to come downstairs and demand that she watch a kids show on the TV. If he says no, she says she will tell. Frustration follows. I actually asked Preston if this was a pattern and after thinking about it, he said, yes! I think he was amazed because I don't think he realized until that moment that his little sister was just being the puppet master! Last night must have gone a bit different, because when I got home Lillie was doing art work and designing games:

A very small painting area, but no big messes!
And the game we just had to try. Family throws hats on the ground, blind folds a person and guides them to pick up hats. It is kind of fun until Hansen decides that tripping, scaring, and just messing with the blindfolded person is just more fun than actually guiding them to the hats! Once that stuff starts, dad ends the game.

See you tomorrow.

It sucks!

Good morning, it is Thursday.

After 14 years, our vacuum cleaner finally died for the last time. It was a very good one, a Sharp that had lived through a couple of cords, hinges, and was without a light for the last few years. Finally after the new fuse didn't revive was replaced:

This is the new Hoover. It got excellent reviews, but is considerably smaller and lighter (which is good too) than the old one. I do think it is cool to have chrome wheels on a vacuum cleaner! We have considerably less carpet than we did 14 years ago as well. The house used to be wall to wall carpet. Now thanks to hardwood and such, there is only carpet in the living room, on the stairs, and in the upstairs hallway. I think this new Hoover will suck just fine!

See you tomorrow.

Good morning, it is Tuesday.

These days I am almost too busy to blog...or I don't like waking up so early anymore. I was thinking about that this morning and in true wacky Slane fashion...I have a theory for it. New bedroom curtains that don't let in any light, and an Amazon Kindle. Yup, I read more at night...then I just don't wake up super early any more as the room is so dark. It is kind of great, except for being tired in the morning because I could even sleep longer. Anyhow, that is my excuse for my blog going more toward the every other day or so status.

Preston's team had an amazing win over the weekend. I thought it was possibly their best game ever against a very good team. One that beat them 8-2 a month ago. Preston was moved to midfield where he sees tons of action. Besides, the better the team they play, the less he gets to just make runs at goal from the forward position...good teams figure this stuff out. Here are Connor, Thomas, and Preston with cupcake frosting on their faces celebrating a great win!

Yesterday I was given a great treat at work! A friend from church was volunteering in their child's class and look what I found on my desk: Yup, a Carmel Apple Cider from Starbucks!
See you tomorrow.

Good morning, it is Saturday.

The other night while Preston was at a high school football game, the rest of us headed to Red Robin for dinner and then to the Halloween store to browse. Lillie and Hansen wished we brought our mortgage check to the Halloween Store and spent it all...and it could be done there too! Dinner was nice, the booths are made for four people and our biggest eater wasn't with us! Of course it would have been nice to have him along, but it worked just fine. Here are a couple pics from the store:

Lillie did a good job of looking grossed out at everything! There were some very disturbing things at this store that I won't even mention in print!
This is just a fun picture that we took for Jack and Avery. They love Toy Story like Preston did as a kid. Hansen and Lillie look awfully cute as the lead characters!

Today is a busy one with two soccer games and a birthday party. So off I go!

See you tomorrow.

Haircuts for three.

Good morning, it is Thursday.

I can't even begin to tell you how busy yesterday I won't. But I will tell you that after I dropped Preston off at the orthodontist and raced home to meet the littles at the bus stop to take them to piano lessons, Maren picked Preston up from the orthodontist and took him to get a haircut!

This is not Preston's favorite picture, but I like it. He just looks like a young adult here. His short hair looks great. But I also like his long hair fine too! I suspect he will have his hair all fancy for school today. He said all his soccer buddies liked his short hair at soccer practice last night...yes we had that on the agenda too.

Once Lillie found out Preston got a haircut...she needed one! She has wanted one for some time, but now was the time. After dinner, as Preston was at soccer practice, I took Lillie and Hansen to get their hair cut as well:
Lillie is very happy to have her bangs back! Shorter in the back is good too, but she wanted it maybe even shorter. I think it is very cute, and it will be much easier to manage.

Hansen didn't really want a haircut, but he is surprisingly happy with his new do. The hair stylist talked me into buying him some hair product! As she said, "the product makes the do!" What baloney, but Hansen liked it. We will see if it ever gets used or if I return it later today. Actually the shocking look on Hansen's face is due to the extremely bright flash on my Droid camera! I need to remember to tell people to look away from the flash!

So there you go! Three new haircuts! Today will be another busy day, but that's no surprise.

See you tomorrow.

Kicking it.

Good morning, it is Wednesday.

Yesterday was a Hansen soccer practice day. That means hanging out at an elementary school for an hour and a half. Usually I talk to other parents after walking around the school loop for a while. Yesterday Preston wanted to come along. Usually the field is crowded with four other teams practicing, but for some reason Hansen's was the only team practicing (back left of picture is Hansen's team). So I kicked the ball around with Preston. I enjoy kicking it around, but I am a bit scared of the ball traveling at me at supersonic speeds, so being a goalie while he just shoots is kind of crazy. Of course, Preston can kick the soccer ball around with me and send text messages to all his friends, no problem.

Speaking of crazy, Preston posted on his Facebook account last night that he was wondering if he should get a haircut. There is already like 57 comments and a few friends that really think he shouldn't and really think he should. Funny!

See you tomorrow.

Treasure seeking.

Good morning, it is Tuesday.

I have not checked my lotto tickets that I bought for my birthday...the longer I don't check them, the longer the dream is alive! But Hansen has different ways to check for treasure:

He saved and saved and this is what he bought...check out the new metal detector! He has scanned the yard and can't wait to get out to the beach near Nana and Grandpa's house! After all, he isn't finding much in this house!

See you tomorrow.

Happy Birthday to me!

Good morning, it is Sunday.

Happy Birthday to me! 10-10-10...I have been waiting 41 years for this birthday! And yes, I will pick up a lotto ticket today!

But this weekend had some other stuff that was very exciting besides just my birthday. Friday evening Hansen and Lillie spent the night with Nana and Grandpa, Preston with friends, and Maren and I went to the Washington State Book Awards where Maren was a presenter for a picture book award that she was on the committee to choose!

Here is Maren in the Seattle Public Library getting ready for the evening.
And here she is giving her wonderful speech to introduce the winner. She did a great job!
Now back to a few hours earlier on Friday evening...John is showing off his new pick-up truck! It is very nice. Congrats. John kept his purchasing of a new pick-up truck quiet because...
He gave me his old one for my birthday! How cool is that? Very cool. Thanks! John had always said that he would drive it until Preston was ready to drive. Preston is already wondering if in the next year we can fix the paint and make the 5-speed stick shift into an automatic. He will have no trouble driving a stick. And in just a year and a half, he will be driving...yikes!

I have had a great birthday! Thanks for the cards and gifts!!! I have also enjoyed reading all the nice posts on my FB page. Today I will be driving a carpool of kids to a soccer game in the pouring rain. But no worries, that won't dampen my birthday day!

See you tomorrow.

Good morning, it is Thursday.

Yesterday was piano lesson day for Hansen and Lillie. That means I pick them up from the bus stop, pack snacks, and take them directly to lessons. Lillie goes first and Hansen goes second. While Lillie was doing her lesson, Hansen played his BameBoy and just relaxed, I read a book. During Hansen's lesson Lillie totally set me up. She took me to the park and made me play Memory with her at the park bench.

Yes, she totally kicked my butt. This girl is the memory master...second only to Hansen, maybe. But hey, I did somehow manage to get four matchers! Pure luck no doubt.

See you tomorrow.

Your favorite book.

Good morning, it is Wednesday.

Yesterday was picture day at school. All the teachers and staff had to get their picture taken. In addition, the staff was to bring in their favorite book to get a picture with as well. Those pictures will be put around the school or something. Most of us who work with the younger grades picked a kids book for our favorite, which is good...after all, I didn't need my picture with all the Harry Potter books, all the Lightning Thief books, the DaVinci Code books, or even Golf My Way. The students wouldn't be skilled enought to read them yet. As it turns out...I have a bunch of favorite books! But I narrowed it down to:

Yay for Harold and the Purple Crayon! The winner of my favorite book award! I think the copy I have is one that Maren bought me new when Preston was little because I wanted a copy for our family. With Maren as our reading expert, it is rare that I request a book, so there you go.

I am curious to see the books other staff choose for their favorite book.

See you tomorrow.

Good morning, it is Tuesday.

Here is part of an e-mail I recieved from Mel regarding Hansen and Lillie playing with Jack and Avery on Saturday:

Just had to tell you what Jack said last night. When we were getting ready for bed I asked them what their favorite part of the day was and Jack said, “Flying….Hansen!!” as he put his arms out to fly!! He had such fun. Aves’ favorite part was reading books with Lillie and Nana.

Hansen and Jack were going so fast that I couldn't even get a good picture of them with my phone. It is great the kids have cousins to hang with! Thanks Mel for the nice e-mail.

See you tomorrow.

A few weekend snapshots.

Good morning, it is Monday.

A few random pictures from the weekend:

The weather was nice! I rode around the Lake Youngs Reservoir with a friend. It is probably my favorite bike ride these days.
This kid with a very real looking gun (very carefully made totally from writing paper) was stalking Preston's soccer game. He was a little brother from the other team. It must have worked, P's team got beat. Hansen's team had a good game coming away with a 2-2 tie.

And a cartoon about seeing your teacher in public. It is funny to me because I see kids from school all the time, and I never know how they will react or how I should for that matter. So usually I just say "hi".

Yesterday the littles spent the day at Nana and Grandpa's house visiting with Jack and Avery. They had a great time as always.

See you tomorrow.

Preston's taking over!

Good morning, it is Friday.

Last night was kind of crazy, but went quite smoothly thanks to Preston helping out. Maren came home from work feeling sick and went to bed (she is still not feeling well and will be staying home from work today). Hansen had soccer practice and plenty of homework. Lillie just had her usual homework. Preston actually offered to watch Lillie while I took Hansen to practice and then make us dinner when we got home! He even offered to help Lillie with her homework, but she turned him down. Can you believe it!

Here is Preston making us pancakes with chocolate chips while Maren rests. I was helping Hansen with his homework. We all really enjoyed chocolate chip pancakes for dinner!

Hansen's practice was fun, long but fun. About the time it was scheduled to end, coach called to any parents that wanted to play. I jumped up and ended up defending Hansen. Hansen actually got the ball, flew by me, darted to the inside and scored a goal! Now I wasn't going to knock him down or anything, but he was too quick and skilled for me to do anything about it! Now he thinks I should pay him an extra $15.00 so he can purchase a metal detector he has had his eye on. What gives?

Anyhow, thanks to Preston's help and the littles not complaining about homework and such, last night went very smoothly while Maren was able to just go to bed early. I am hoping Maren gets better soon! But I was pleasantly surprised how well the kids stepped up and did more than usual just to let their sick mom rest.

See you tomorrow.
